Finding Light in a Disruptive Year
As the year comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on the currents of change and disruption that have shaped our collective experience. It’s been a year of uncertainty, punctuated by shifting leadership, complex challenges, and a world where stability feels elusive. Yet, within this turbulence lies an opportunity—an invitation to focus on what we can control, to create goodness where we can, and to nurture connection in the spaces we occupy.
In moments like these, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by forces beyond our grasp. But as a psychologist, I know that one of the most empowering things we can do is turn our attention to the immediate. What can we influence? How can we foster kindness, strength, and goodwill in the places we touch? These are questions I’ve encouraged my daughters—and myself—to carry forward. When we focus on what we can do, even small actions become a foundation for hope.
This season offers a poignant reminder to slow down and anchor ourselves in the present. The holidays are a chance to wrap ourselves in the warmth of loved ones, to embrace the joy of small moments, and to celebrate the connections that sustain us. Hugs, shared meals, and stories from years past have a way of grounding us in what truly matters. These simple, human experiences remind us that even in disruptive times, there’s beauty to be found in togetherness.
Of course, letting go of worry and uncertainty is easier said than done. But in a world that often pulls our focus to the negative, I believe we have the power to shift our attention toward what uplifts us. Whether that’s creating positive moments for others, surrounding ourselves with people who bring out the best in us, or choosing to see the potential for good amidst change—these are ways we can reclaim our sense of agency.
As we look ahead to a new year, I encourage each of us to embrace the opportunity to make a difference, no matter how small. It might be a kind word, a gesture of support, or simply taking the time to listen to someone who needs it. These moments add up, creating ripples of positivity that can reach far beyond what we see.
Change is rarely comfortable, but it’s often necessary. And as we navigate this period of transformation together, I’m reminded that disruption, while unsettling, can also be a catalyst for growth. My hope is that we meet the year ahead with courage, compassion, and the determination to bring good into the world in whatever ways we can.
Wishing you a season of peace, connection, and renewal.
